Sown mini-meadows increase pollinator diversity in gardens

چکیده
Abstract Habitat loss and fragmentation are considered the foremost threats in pollinator decline, England Wales, 97% of wildflower meadows were lost by 1984. The value creating flower-rich margins agricultural environments is established, yet there growing potential to support populations urban landscapes. We used citizen science investigate effectiveness small 4m 2 sown ‘mini-meadows’ UK gardens allotments recruiting beneficial insects. Participants allocated one three treatment groups: Mix 1 (commercially available ‘meadow mix’); (formulated based on existing literature foraging preferences); or Control (no additional wildflowers). All participants conducted insect sampling over two years using standardised pan sticky trap methods May–August. Samples returned for identification trained specialists. Mini-meadows provided resource-rich habitats, increasing wild bee richness supporting average 111% more bumblebees, 87% solitary bees 85% wasps year following seed-sowing, compared plots. mixes also taxon-specific their attractiveness. attracted whereas wasps. There was no significant difference abundance hoverflies between treatments. Higher caught amongst mini-meadow perhaps due shorter ranges. Pyrodiversity begets plant-pollinator community diversity.
Fire has a major impact on the structure and function of many ecosystems globally. Pyrodiversity, the diversity of fires within a region (where diversity is based on fire characteristics such as extent, severity, and frequency), has been hypothesized to promote biodiversity, but changing climate and land management practices have eroded pyrodiversity. To assess whether changes in pyrodiversity ...
متن کاملSecret Gardens Under the Sea: What are Seagrass Meadows and Why are They Important?
In nearly all the seas around the world, in the shallow waters next to the land, are secret underwater gardens. These gardens are home to a special marine (saltwater) plant called seagrass. When seagrass grows in large areas, the habitat it creates is called a seagrass meadow. Seagrass meadows play an important role in keeping our oceans healthy and providing a home for all kinds of marine life...
متن کاملExperimental evidence that wildflower strips increase pollinator visits to crops
Wild bees provide a free and potentially diverse ecosystem service to farmers growing pollination-dependent crops. While many crops benefit from insect pollination, soft fruit crops, including strawberries are highly dependent on this ecosystem service to produce viable fruit. However, as a result of intensive farming practices and declining pollinator populations, farmers are increasingly turn...

Virus and worm attacks that exploit system implementation details can be countered with a diversiied set of implementations. Furthermore, immune systems show that attacks from previously unknown organisms require eeective dynamic response. In the Synthetix project, we have been developing a specialization toolkit to improve the performance of operating system kernels. The toolkit helps programm...
